Most common mistake when we plan soccer training sessions

What is usually the most common mistake when planning a workout?

One of the most frequent mistakes made by youth soccer coaches is that they give a lot of importance to setting up and preparing the exercise, instead of focusing on something more important, which is knowing what situations are going to occur more often during the game, and from there we must analyze that situation to work on the tasks of those situations that can be repeated within the game.

There are some coaches who carry out exercises without focusing on match situations and others who adapt too much to the match. None of these cases is correct, since many things happen within a soccer match and you cannot predict 100% what is going to happen, and therefore you have to work on situations in which each player must be clear about their role in their position, before starting to carry out global tasks, because it is useless to carry out exercises for the game if your players do not master their individual fundamentals within their position.

Aspects to take into account while planning the training week

  • Emotional aspects of my coaching staff and my players

The emotional situation of my players and my coaching staff will determine the attitude in the first training session of the week. The talk of that first training should be aimed at changing the emotional aspect to where it interests me. Relax and give confidence, generate an attitude of demand, motivate...

  • Analyze rival of the week

Assess the opponent we have ahead of us, whether it is demanding enough a priori and will help me motivate my players or if it is an opponent that is simple a priori and my players will be more relaxed. This will help me determine the demands of the training and know how to attack the points that I should focus on to achieve the maximum possible motivation.

  • Take into account casualties and players who will become important this week

Surely by the next day you will already be clear which players will not be able to play and which players will take their place. It is easy to understand that a player who could be a starter that week, but who has not been, could have added pressure. Therefore, it is important to assess it for individual talks.

  • Physical load

According to our physical trainer, we must take into account what load we have to have in this week of training, analyzing the physical condition with which our players have finished is essential to adapt the training.

  • Define objectives

Define the objectives that I want to achieve that week. Once I have analyzed the emotional aspects, the absences and the physical load that the players bring, I must define the objectives. Many coaches first set the objectives and then find themselves with significant losses and with content that they must assimilate that is difficult to implement with those losses.
